My son asked me last Thanksgiving why I’m always up before everybody else. I laughed and said, “Old habit.” He had no idea what that habit cost.

To all of them, I’m the one with the apple pie and the jar of butterscotch candies. Mom who never sits down at Thanksgiving. That’s the whole picture they have of me.

But there is a part of my life they never really saw. I buried my husband at thirty-eight, with the four of them still at home and a diner with his name over the door.

Those years tested me in ways they will never know unless I tell them. And one day it struck me: if I don’t say it, it just… goes. They’ll remember the pie and none of the rest.

I didn’t want to be remembered as only half of who I was.

Me behind the counter of our diner, back then

“To them I’m the one with the apple pie. They never knew the rest of me.”

The Thing That Finally Got It Out of Me

I’d tried before. My daughter bought me a journal one Christmas. It sat in a drawer. Of course it did.

Then, one evening, I found something myself. After a lifetime of “someday,” I tried it because I wouldn’t have to write a single word.

It’s a service called Memowrite. You just answer questions, out loud or typed, whichever suits you. I did mine out loud, into my phone, the way I’d tell it at the table. About fifty of them, one at a time.

More than a million of these books have been printed. I wasn’t the only one who waited until someone finally asked.

A Real Team Made It a Real Book

I didn’t have to do it alone. Here’s how it worked:

My part:

✅ One question at a time, answered out loud at the kitchen table
✅ No writing, no word limits
✅ Skipped what I wasn’t ready to tell and came back to it later
✅ Read every page before anything was printed

Their part:

✅ Real editors put my answers in order and fixed my grammar
✅ Every chapter still sounds like me
✅ A hardcover with my own photos, up to 500 pages

Me answering the questions out loud on my phone at the kitchen table.

But Would It Still Sound Like Me?

That was the part I worried about. I’m no writer, and I didn’t want a stranger smoothing my words into something that wasn’t me.

Here is one of my answers, the way I actually said it, and what the team turned it into.

What I actually said

In my book

“Oh, the diner. After their dad, I was in there at four-thirty every morning, years of that. Four kids at home, his name over the door, and I wasn’t letting either one go under. The kids figured I just liked getting up early. I let them think it.”

“After I buried their father, I unlocked the diner at four-thirty every morning, for years. I had four children at home and his name over the door, and I was not going to let either of them go under. My kids thought I simply liked getting up early. I let them think that.”

That’s me. Minus the “oh”s. They didn’t rewrite me. They found the sentence I couldn’t.

And nothing gets printed until you’ve read every page. If a line doesn’t sound like you, they redo it free until it does.

When my son read it, he said, “Mom, this is exactly how you talk.” That was the whole point.

My son reading my finished book on the couch.

He looks at me a little differently now. Like there’s a whole person where the apple pie used to be. There always was.

If You’ve Been Putting It Off, Let This Be the Sign

You know the parts of you I mean. The ones your family would never guess, the ones you assume there will always be time to tell.

You don’t need to be a writer. You don’t need perfect grammar. You don’t need to be good with phones. Help is there 24/7. You just need to start.

And yes, my kids will finally know the whole of me now. I think I needed to be known as much as they needed to know me.

It cost less than a nice dinner out with the whole family. And it’s the only place the whole of me exists now, for good.

If you want to hold it by Christmas, start this week. Once your answers are in, the book is printed and on its way within days.

You can always start “someday.” But the memories are sharpest now, and a book like this takes weeks to print.

Someday is how a life gets lost. This is the week to start.

Real Reviews From Real Customers

Writing a book about us felt easier than I ever imagined

Margaret D.

I always assumed writing a book (especially about my husband) would be overwhelming. But in the end, choosing the cover photo was the hardest part. Before I knew it, I was holding a real book in my hands, filled with memories I hadn’t revisited in years.

Nothing compares to a story from the heart

Peter H.

Of all the gifts I’ve given over the years, none has meant as much as writing this for my granddaughter. Putting my hopes for her into a book felt bigger than any present I could buy. It’s something she can hold onto after birthdays are over.

The best birthday gift I’ve ever given

Linda F.

I thought that it might be a little too weird – it felt a little unusual. But my friend absolutely loved it! Tears, laughter, everything. If you're still unsure whether you should write a book about someone, do it. It's all worth it in the end.

Surprisingly fun

George M.

I thought this would feel like homework, but it turned into one of the most enjoyable things I’ve done lately. I ended up writing stories about my mom that I hadn’t revisited in years.

It made our relationship stronger

Evelyn R.️

Writing about our love story made me remember how much I truly love him. The final book is beautiful and I’m proud of what I created.
