From Barking Dog to First Date: How A New Hobby Changed My Love Life

The neighbor’s dog deserves partial credit for my love life.

If he hadn’t barked every afternoon at exactly 2:17 PM, I might never have packed up my laptop. And if the delivery trucks hadn’t rattled my windows, I might have given up on writing my book altogether.

Instead, I went to the library.

The thing is, I had started Memowrite because I wanted to write down my life story – not in a scattered journal, but in an actual book.

But I couldn’t concentrate at home.

So I found a quiet table near the window at our local library and made it mine.

There was something comforting about it – the soft turning of pages, the muted footsteps, the golden afternoon light on the wooden desks…

I’d open my laptop, read the next Memowrite prompt, and just start typing.

Some days I smiled at the screen. Other days I paused, surprised by how much I still carried inside me.

After about a week of this routine, I noticed him.

He sat a few tables away most afternoons. Around my age, always with a newspaper and reading glasses that were a little bit crooked.

One afternoon, he finally walked over.

I hope I’m not interrupting,” he said. “I’ve seen you here every day with your laptop. You look very focused. What are you working on?

For a split second, I almost downplayed it.

But instead, I said, “I’m writing a book.

Even saying it out loud made my heart race a little.

His eyes widened. “A book? That’s incredible.”

I told him about Memowrite – how it asked me 50 questions to help write my life story. You don’t even need to be a writer – everything is set up in a way to help you turn your memories into chapters. I told him I finally felt like I was creating something meaningful – a hardcover book about my life.

And to be honest, it’s easier to understand when you look at it yourself.

He didn’t just nod politely – he asked more about it.

About my favorite chapter so far. About what surprised me most. About why I decided to start now.

Before walking away, he said, “Would you like to continue this conversation over coffee?

I said yes.

Coffee turned into dinner. Dinner turned into long walks. He’d ask which chapter I was working on. I’d ask about his own memories.

It felt like we were both rediscovering parts of ourselves.

When it was time to print my Memowrite book, I ordered an extra copy.

I wrapped it in simple paper and gave it to him.

For encouraging the author,” I joked.

He told me it was one of the most thoughtful gifts he’d ever received.

Especially because it had the photo he took of me on the cover.

We’re still going on dates.

And here’s the truth: finishing my book didn’t just preserve my past.

It woke something up in me.

Writing reminded me that I am a woman with stories worth telling.

And a heart still longing for romance.

I may have gone to the library for quiet.

But I walked away feeling decades younger and with a brand new love story.

Writing a book about us felt easier than I ever imagined

Margaret D.

I always assumed writing a book (especially about my husband) would be overwhelming. But in the end, choosing the cover photo was the hardest part. Before I knew it, I was holding a real book in my hands, filled with memories I hadn’t revisited in years.

Nothing compares to a story from the heart

Peter H.

Of all the gifts I’ve given over the years, none has meant as much as writing this for my granddaughter. Putting my hopes for her into a book felt bigger than any present I could buy. It’s something she can hold onto after birthdays are over.

The best birthday gift I’ve ever given

Linda F.

I thought that it might be a little too weird – it felt a little unusual. But my friend absolutely loved it! Tears, laughter, everything. If you're still unsure whether you should write a book about someone, do it. It's all worth it in the end.

Surprisingly fun

George M.

I thought this would feel like homework, but it turned into one of the most enjoyable things I’ve done lately. I ended up writing stories about my mom that I hadn’t revisited in years.

It made our relationship stronger

Evelyn R.️

Writing about our love story made me remember how much I truly love him. The final book is beautiful and I’m proud of what I created.
