From Barking Dog to First Date: How A New Hobby Changed My Love Life

The neighbor’s dog deserves partial credit for my love life.

If he hadn’t barked every afternoon at exactly 2:17 PM, I might never have packed up my laptop. And if the delivery trucks hadn’t rattled my windows, I might have given up on writing my book altogether.

Instead, I went to the library.

The thing is, I had started Memowrite because I wanted to write down my life story – not in a scattered journal, but in an actual book. 

But I couldn’t concentrate at home. 

So I found a quiet table near the window at our local library and made it mine.

There was something comforting about it – the soft turning of pages, the muted footsteps, the golden afternoon light on the wooden desks…

One afternoon, he finally walked over.

“I hope I’m not interrupting,” he said. “I’ve seen you here every day with your laptop. You look very focused. What are you working on?”

For a split second, I almost downplayed it.

But instead, I said, “I’m writing a book.”

Even saying it out loud made my heart race a little.

His eyes widened. “A book? That’s incredible.”

I wrapped it in simple paper and gave it to him.

“For encouraging the author,” I joked.

He told me it was one of the most thoughtful gifts he’d ever received.

Especially because it had the photo he took of me on the cover. 

We’re still going on dates.

And here’s the truth: finishing my book didn’t just preserve my past. 

It woke something up in me. 

Writing reminded me that I am a woman with stories worth telling. 

And a heart still longing for romance.

I may have gone to the library for quiet.

But I walked away feeling decades younger and with a brand new love story.
